When designing this box, I wanted to come up with a texture that would suggest the look of honeycomb. I had just unpacked a box and the bubble wrap was sitting on the sink. The light went on! It’ s interesting how the creative process in our mind works. Just by adding a few short liner strokes around the circle shapes that were pressed into the paint, I could create the illusion of the honeycomb!
Texture applied to your painted surface adds interest to the whole piece.
Try using simple things you can find around you. Experiment on poster board. Use flower petals, pine needles, cut veggies or a piece of heavy woven fabric. You may come up with a new interesting background to paint on!

PREPARATION
Seal the entire box with waterbased sealer. When dry, sand lightly.

Lid and trim base: Using the 1" wash brush, basecoat the entire lid with Antique White. When dry, base again with Antique White. While the paint is still wet, pick up small amounts of Raw Sienna and Medium Foliage Green and slip-slap them onto the wet paint so you get softly blended colors.

Lower box sides and inside the box: Base with Butter Yellow using the 1" wash brush. Mix the kleister medium with Raw Sienna (1:1). Brush a thick coat onto one side of the box. Press the bubble wrap onto the paint with the bubble side down. Make sure the rows of bubbles are lined up with the long edge so the bubbles go straight across, and not at an angle. Press firmly into the paint and lift off carefully. Continue on with the other three sides. You should be able to see the pattern against the Butter Yellow. Let dry completely.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Center Sections: Trace on the border line for the section where the flowers and bees go (this is the heavy line on the pattern). Using the #8 shader, paint on a transparent coat of Raw Sienna around the outside of this section. You should still see the bubble design through the paint.

Trace on the rest of the design. Using the 10/0 liner and Antique White, paint the groups of the honeycomb pattern.

Hint: Some groups of honeycomb will have five sections and some will have three; you can place one here and there depending on where your bubble design falls, so don’t just trace them from the pattern. Use the pattern as a suggestion of how the honeycomb should look.

Leaves: Paint the leaves using the #4 and #6 shaders. Use the #4 for the smaller leaves. The paint is semi-transparent; just thin with water. Some of the leaves are Medium Foliage Green and some are a bit darker. To make the darker ones, pick up a small amount of Dark Foliage Green on the dirty brush and blend it on your palette. Even the dark leaves should be light enough for the vein lines to show over the paint.

Petals: Base using the #6 shader and thinned Antique White. Pick up a dot of Antique White on one corner of the shader and re-coat the outer edges of the petals. Line around the edge of the petals with the 10/0 liner using White. For the flower center, use the #4 round and Butter Yellow and pull out spiky strokes from the center. When dry, use the 10/0 liner and Raw Sienna and pull thin, feathery strokes along the outer edge of the flower center. Add a White highlight oval stroke on the upper right of the flower center. Add Black dots around the outer edge of the flower center using a stylus. Scatter them onto the petals.

The buds have three petals. Using the 10/0 liner and Raw Sienna, pull out thin gather-like strokes from the base of the petals, two-thirds of the way to the tips. Line around the outer edge of the petals with White. The base of the bud is a half-circle of Medium Foliage Green.

Leaf Stems & Veins: Paint using the 10/0 liner and a mix of Dark Foliage Green + a dot of Black. One side of each leaf is a smooth stroke from the base to the tip; the other side has short strokes along the edge, giving it a ragged look. Line along the outer curve of the bud cup. Use the liner to paint short, fringe-like strokes along the edge of the bud cup. They extend up onto the bud petals.

CHAIRS
Paint the small stars on the seat of the chair with White. Basecoat the large stars with Yellow. Let dry.

In the center of each large star, base the area for the flag with White. When dry, base the blue area with French Blue. Paint the stripes with Crimson. Let dry for 24 hours.

DETAILS
Attach the fine tip to the top of the Black paint bottle, and squeeze a small amount of paint onto a piece of scrap paper. Next, loosely outline the designs and add details to the table and chairs. With the same tip, add the words to the edge of the table. Let dry.

With the #5 flat brush and Black, add the checks around the edge of the table. Let dry.

Using the #10 flat brush, paint the checks around the stars on the chairs. Paint the White checks first, then add Black in between. Let dry.

FINISHING
Allow the painting to thoroughly dry for at least 48 hours. When dry, use a soft brush and smooth strokes to cover the surface with sealer. When this coat is dry, add a second coat, brushing in the opposite direction.
